A frost-free freezer runs a defrost cycle several times a day: a heater warms the evaporator briefly to melt the thin layer of ice that forms, and the meltwater drains away. When that cycle fails, ice accumulates on the coils and back wall, and airflow to the rest of the box drops. That is why a defrost fault often shows up first as frost and later as a warm fridge side. Colorado Springs's dry air means we rarely blame humidity; the cause is almost always inside the defrost circuit or a door seal.
First Checks Before You Book
- Confirm the door closes fully and the gasket seals; a stiff or torn seal loads the cycle with moist air.
- Check that nothing is holding a drawer or door open a crack.
- Note where the frost is: back-wall coils point to defrost; frost only around the door points to the gasket.
- Avoid using sharp tools to chip ice, which can puncture the evaporator.
Notes by Brand
- Sub-Zero: defrost heater and thermostat faults are the usual cause; on dual-system built-ins only the affected compartment ices.
- Thermador, KitchenAid & Jenn-Air: a defrost thermostat or adaptive-defrost control board that no longer triggers the cycle.
- Liebherr & Miele: integrated units may show a temperature alarm as the iced evaporator loses efficiency.
- Viking: gasket wear is a common secondary cause, letting warm air overload the defrost cycle.
Frost Fault Guide
| What You Notice | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Ice on back-wall coils | Failed defrost heater | Replace defrost heater |
| Frost returns days after defrosting | Defrost thermostat or control fault | Replace thermostat or control |
| Frost around door only | Worn or torn door gasket | Replace gasket |
| Frost plus warming fridge side | Defrost fault choking airflow | Repair defrost circuit, verify cycle |
